Metuchen Moves Forward With Forum Revitalization Through State Grant Program

METUCHEN, NJ — Metuchen has officially submitted its application to the New Jersey Economic Development Authority (EDA) for funding to revitalize the historic Forum Theatre, marking a significant milestone in the long-awaited restoration project. The news was shared by Mayor Jonathan M Busch on Facebook. The application was filed through the Cultural and Arts Facilities Expansion (CAFE) Program, which provides tax credits specifically for transformative arts and culture initiatives. Borough officials expect the EDA to review the application this fall, with approval representing what they describe as the removal of "the final major hurdle" to the Forum's restoration. The CAFE Program application follows months of public input sessions and Council meeting discussions where community members have weighed in on the project's scope and vision. These meetings have helped shape the borough's approach to transforming the Forum into more than just a restored landmark. "This is about more than reconstructing a landmark," Busch said. "It’s about creating a sustainable cultural hub at the heart of Metuchen’s Arts District which will fuel our downtown, support local artists, and generate long-term economic opportunity for our region." The Forum Theatre has been a central fixture in Metuchen's downtown area for decades, and its revitalization is seen as a key component of the borough's broader Arts District development strategy. If approved by the EDA, the CAFE Program funding would provide crucial financial support through tax credits, making the ambitious restoration project financially viable. The program is specifically designed to support projects that demonstrate significant cultural and economic impact potential. Community members who participated in the public input sessions have expressed strong support for the project, viewing it as an important step in preserving Metuchen's cultural heritage while creating new opportunities for artistic expression and economic development. Guilford Man Charged With Possession Of Child Pornography: Police

GUILFORD, CT — A 75-year-old Guilford man was arrested on June 5 and charged with second-degree possession of child pornography, according to police. The CT Judicial Branch website shows that Richard Rooney was released on a $50,000 surety bond. He's scheduled to appear in court in New Haven on June 18. Police said in an arrest warrant affidavit that several images and a video depicting child sex abuse material (CSAM) were found on Rooney's laptop following a search warrant and forensic analysis of his electronic devices in recent months. Internet search terms also associated with CSAM were located on the laptop, the warrant noted. On Sept. 3, 2024, Guilford Police detectives received a tip from the CT State Police Internet Crimes Against Children Unit that a user of an IP address, later determined to be located in Guilford, searched for an image on Aug. 25, 2024, that was labeled as child pornography, Guilford Police Det. Amy Peckham said in an arrest warrant. The IP address was traced to Rooney, and on Sept. 26, a search warrant was executed at his home where officers seized a laptop, cell phone and a USB flash drive, the arrest warrant said. Officers went to speak with Rooney at his place of work, and he provided passwords to his devices, the warrant said. While getting the password to his laptop, Peckham noticed Rooney had a password saved for a Russian-hosted search engine known to be used by individuals interested in viewing child pornography, the warrant said. Rooney told police he often viewed pornography through the search engine and other sites, and used search terms such as "young teens," which he described as 18-30-year-old females, the warrant said. While searching for material, Rooney told police he would get "pop-ups" on his computer that depicted child pornography, according to the warrant. During an interview later at Guilford Police Headquarters where officers "spoke at length" with Rooney about his online activity, he "acknowledged that he had seen the image which initiated this investigation," the warrant noted. "Richard was asked how long he had been viewing child pornography online and he advised he could not provide an accurate timeframe," the warrant said. "Richard advised that he did not know viewing child pornography was illegal." From October 2024 to March 2025, authorities conducted a forensic analysis of Rooney's electronic devices, the warrant detailed. Nine images and a video depicting CSAM were found on Rooney's laptop, as well as various search terms associated with such material, the warrant said. Additionally, 295 images and three videos were tagged as non-CSAM, the warrant said. Peckham reviewed the images and "observed that many of these images depict child erotica, however, there were numerous other images that also appear to depict CSAM," according to the warrant. Rooney's online searches also showed that he visited live-streaming sites which advertised showing "nude preteen girls," the warrant noted. The arrest warrant for Rooney was signed by a New Haven Superior Court judge on May 23....

Incident With Truck Spewing Diesel Exhaust Into Crowd Mars Enfield "No Kings Day" Rally

ENFIELD, CT — An estimated 700 people attended a No Kings Day protest in front of Enfield Town Hall Saturday, but local social media pages remain abuzz over an incident which was recorded on video and widely distributed. According to multiple sources present at the rally, a diesel pickup truck made several passes by a line of protesters on Enfield Street, crossing the white line of the shoulder while spewing heavy black exhaust smoke into the crowd. The incident was captured on video and posted on TikTok, with the caption, "What I do to libtards in town protesting anti trump and ICE." A different angle of the incident may be viewed here. James Lareau, who attended the rally with his wife, told Patch, "A man driving a modified diesel truck made three deliberate passes along the protest line, blasting black exhaust smoke (“rolling coal”) directly onto peaceful demonstrators - including children, elderly residents, and veterans." According to findlaw.com, "Coal rollers are diesel pickup owners who trick out their vehicles in ways that allow them to belch smoke whenever the mood strikes. Often, that means targeting people and things they don't like, such as Black Lives Matter protesters, bicyclists, or electric cars." "This was not accidental," Lareau said. "It was filmed, posted, and proudly admitted to by the perpetrator himself. He mocked the act, stated that the fine was "worth it," and implied police were lenient because they knew him. This was not a spur-of-the-moment decision - it was planned, filmed, distributed, and celebrated as an attack on people for their political beliefs. The target wasn't just a road - it was our right to peacefully assemble." The TikTok account is under the user name "3g_on_top1," which is owned by Collyn Plourde. A list of infractions for the weekend, obtained by Patch from the Enfield Police Department, shows an infraction entry at 1:24 p.m. that day for Collyn Lewis Plourde, issued for "excessive fumes/exhaust smoke." The listed fine was $225. On his TikTok page, Plourde acknowledged receiving the ticket, commenting, "It was worth it" in response to several supporters. He also posted a link to a GoFundMe he established to cover the cost of the citation, with a listed goal of $300. Police Chief Alaric Fox told Patch, "This information, including the video of concern, is being assigned to the initial at-scene officer for investigation and appropriate follow-up action, in conjunction with guidance that is expected from the State’s Attorney’s Office as to whether further charges are warranted."...

Danville Council To Vote On 2025/26 Operating Budget

DANVILLE, CA — The Danville Town Council will vote Tuesday whether to approve the 2025/26 Operating Budget, in addition to the Master Fee Schedule and the Successor Agency Budget for the former Community Development Agency. The $46.9 million budget includes $32.7 million in General Fund revenue and $12.3 million in Special Purpose revenue, according to a town staff report. The budget projects $42.6 million in expenditures, which include public safety, infrastructure maintenance, community programming, and $1.83 million for the town's Successor Agency, which handles the obligations of the former Community Development Agency. Danville remains in a strong financial position overall, with over $16 million in reserves, and no unfunded pension obligations. Nonetheless, the town still faces challenges like flat sales tax revenue, inflation, and reduced access to federal and state infrastructure grants. The successful ballot initiative to create a new Lighting and Landscape Assessment District is expected to bring in an additional $1.4 million annually. The updated Master Fee Schedule includes modest fee increases around 2.8% to adjust for inflation. See here to learn more and view the entire budget. See here for Tuesday's full meeting agenda....

'Devastating News': School, Community Heartbroken After DWI Crash Left LI Student Dead, 6 Injured, Police Say

EAST HAMPTON, NY — Hearts are shattered in East Hampton and beyond Monday as a tragic DWI crash on Father's Day night that left one girl dead and six teens injured rocked the close-knit community. According to East Hampton Town police, the crash took place at 7:39 p.m. on Old Stone Highway near Deep Six Drive. Luis Gonzalo Barrionuevo-Fuertes 18, of Moriches, was operating a 2009 Toyota Camry southbound on Old Stone Highway near Deep Six Drive when the vehicle left the roadway, overturned and struck a tree, police said. The Springs Fire Department responded and extricated two passengers from the vehicle, police said. Scarleth S. Urgiles 19, a junior at East Hampton High School, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. Passenger Jennifer Amon-Barrers 18, of East Hampton was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital where she is listed in serious, but stable condition, police said. Additional passengers Michael Puente 19, Melanie Mendez, 19, Carlos Pinos, 18, and two juveniles, 15 and 17, all of East Hampton, were transported to Stony Brook Southampton Hospital by East Hampton and Amagansett Ambulance for treatment of injuries, police said. "It is with deep sadness and a heavy heart that I share devastating news about a tragedy that has deeply affected our school and community," said Sara Smith, principal of East Hampton High School. "One of our beloved students has passed away" as a result of a csh that also involved other East Hampton students who sustained injuries, she said. She added: "There are no words that can fully express the sorrow we feel for the family, friends, and all those impacted by this heartbreaking loss. During times like these, we are reminded of how strong and united the East Hampton community truly is. We come together to lift each other up, support one another, and provide comfort in the face of unimaginable grief," she said. In response, the district will have its full mental health team available to support students in any way they need, she said. "In addition, professionals from the Family Service League and Hospice will be on-site to offer counseling and guidance to any student who may need help processing this profound tragedy. We encourage families to speak with their children, to check in, and to let them know it is okay to grieve, to feel, and to seek help. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to us if you feel your child would benefit from additional support. "Together, as one community, we will honor the life that was lost, support those who are healing, and continue to lean on each other in the days and weeks ahead," Smith said. East Hampton School Superintendent Adam Fine also reached out to the community: "It is with profound sadness that I share the heartbreaking news that one of our high school students was killed, and several others were injured," in Sunday's crash. "There are no words to properly express the feelings of loss and grief that we feel at this time. The East Hampton community is strong and resilient and always comes together when needed." Grief counselors will be available throughout the day, he said. "Please contact the high school to speak to one of our crisis specialists if your child needs assistance to navigate this difficult period. " Gonzalo Barrionuevo-Fuertes was placed under arrest at the scene and was transported to East Hampton Town police headquarters where he awaits arraignment at East Hampton Town Justice Court, police said. He was charged with driving while intoxicated, first offense; aggravated driving while intoxicated with a child passenger less than 16, first offense, a felony under Leandra's Law; and endangering the welfare of a child, police said. Hampton Bays School Superintendent Lars Clemensen also expressed his deep sorrow: "Our Hampton Bays hearts are with our friends in East Hampton who woke up to the worst nightmare this morning as educators with the loss of a student and many injuries in a car accident last night." The Hampton Bays Fire Department, he said, works with high school seniors to illustrate the realities of drinking and driving. "June is a joyous celebration season for our young people and we want to keep it that way," he said. East Hampton Town Supervisor Kathee Burke-Gonzalez also expressed her sorrow. "There are moments when words fail. This is one of them. Our community is heartbroken. We are mourning the loss of Scarleth Urgiles, a 19-year-old young woman whose life ended far too soon. We are praying for those who were injured, and we are standing with their families as they face the unimaginable." She added: "To Scarleth’s loved ones, please know that you are not alone. We grieve with you. We ache with you. And while nothing can ease this pain, we hope you feel the strength and love of the community around you. We will walk with you through this, together. To the families of those who were injured, please know this community is thinking of you. We are holding you in our hearts and hoping for healing and strength. Your children matter to all of us, and so do you." Burke-Gonzalez said she wanted to thank East Hampton School Superintendent Adam Fine, Principal Sara Smith, the teachers and staff at East Hampton High School, and the counselors who "responded quickly and compassionately to support our students during this incredibly difficult time. To the Springs Fire Department, and to the Springs, Amagansett, and East Hampton Village ambulance crews, thank you. Your efforts made a difference, and your care means so much to this community. And to the officers of the East Hampton Town Police Department, thank you. We are grateful for the professionalism and compassion you bring to your work every day, especially in moments like this." And, she added: "To our young people, I want you to hear this clearly. You do not have to carry this alone. If you are hurting, please talk to someone. You are surrounded by people who care about you and who are here to help. East Hampton is a small town. We feel these losses deeply. And while nothing can take away the pain, we can continue to show up for one another with compassion, with presence, and with love. Let us remember Scarleth. Let us hold those still recovering in our thoughts. And let us keep each other close in the days ahead." Alisa McMorris lost her beloved son Andrew McMorris of Wading River when he was killed by a drunk driver in 2018 while out on a hike with his Boy Scout troop. He was just 12 years old when his young life was cut cruelly short. Speaking with Patch on the East Hampton tragedy and the driver accused of DWI, McMorris said: "Every time I hear about other young lives lost to drunk driving, it takes me back to the day my whole world fell apart. The horror of that moment echoes in my chest and I am reminded of the deafening silence of the after. I lost my child because someone chose to drive impaired and that choice ended my child's life — and now another family is living that same nightmare. And it breaks me all over again." She added: "These aren't just tragic stories. These aren't accidents. They are 100 percent preventable." To every adult and teen, McMorris said: "Please, think before you get behind the wheel or into a car with someone who's been drinking. One choice can destroy lives in a second. Be the friend who speaks up. Be the one who saves a life. How many more people have to die before we stop treating this like bad luck instead of a preventable crime? Once you know better, you do better. What are we waiting for?" The vehicle was impounded for safety inspection and the investigation is continuing, police said; anyone with information is asked to contact the East Hampton Town Police Department's detective division at 631-537-7575....

Colts Neck Presents 4th Round Affordable Housing Plan

COLTS NECK, NJ — Colts Neck Township presented its 4th Round Housing Element & Fair Share Plan at a Township Committee meeting Wednesday night amidst resident concerns about where housing may be built throughout town. The plan was presented by Colts Neck’s Affordable Housing Planner, Beth McManus of Kyle + McManus Associates, at the committee’s 7 p.m. meeting at the Conover Road Primary School. The presentation followed a previous Planning Board meeting where the plan was presented, and a January meeting where residents were invited to weigh in on how Colts Neck should address the town's housing requirements. Requirements for affordable housing in Colts Neck (and other NJ municipalities) are generated from calculations by the Department of Community Affairs, which determines how many units municipalities must provide over the next decade. In Colts Neck, the fourth round present housing need (existing housing units deemed substandard/deficient and in need of repair) is 0, and the prospective housing need (the number of new units that need to be built based on population trends) is 101 units, according to calculations from the DCA. To address their obligation of 101 new units, McManus said the town plans to rely on a durational adjustment, which is a strategy for municipalities that don’t have enough sewer or water infrastructure to properly build housing. According to the town's 4th round plan, the adjustment regulations and lack of sewer infrastructure in Colts Neck make it so "the township is not required to adopt zoning or take other actions at this time to satisfy the obligation." Notwithstanding, the town will incorporate "potentially appropriate affordable housing strategies" that come to fruition in an amended housing plan and "reduce the extent of the durational adjustment accordingly." “It’s [a durational adjustment] meant for municipalities like Colts Neck,” McManus said. “It gives us an option to comply and maintain protection from builder's remedy litigation, without having to install or build infrastructure.” By using a durational adjustment, the town is aiming to avoid builders’ remedy litigation [which could give developers control over building projects in Colts Neck], though in exchange for using it, McManus said municipalities must work with developers that may gain control of the property. “When they [the developers] make an application to the NJ Department of Environmental Protection for extending sewer, or creating sewer, or a package plan, the municipality must support their application,” McManus said. “...In general, as long as the developer has chosen a developable property, municipalities are obligated to work with them.” Though municipalities must work with developers, McManus emphasized that they are not required to fund these applications or fund any of the construction. The town may also amend the housing plan to incorporate strategies that can reduce the scope of the durational adjustment and give better control over the town's land use, such as extension of affordability controls or converting market-rate homes to affordable homes. To support these options, Mayor Tara Torchia Buss said the town can use money from their Affordable Housing Trust Fund, which consists of collected fees and funds, not taxpayer money. According to McManus, there’s about $1.3 million in the fund as of March 31. “I just want to make it clear that the reason why we are choosing and would like to go with a 100% durational adjustment instead of putting other things in our spending plan right now is because we’ve been working very hard and diligently as a governing body, as our professionals, as our employees, to take advantage of some of these strategies,” Buss said. “Meeting with nonprofits, meeting with some of these groups that do 100% affordable housing...the reason it’s not in our spending plan is because the township will be on the hook for that." To elaborate on Buss’ point, McManus added that what’s put in Colts Neck’s housing plan has to be right and has to be developable, otherwise the town could be in trouble for not having the ability to fulfill the program. “We need to be certain that anything that we place in that housing plan can indeed be fulfilled,” McManus said. “It’s much easier to add something new that comes to fruition a couple of months from now, than try to beg for forgiveness when something doesn’t happen.” Following the presentation, some residents took to the floor to express concerns about the plan and where affordable housing units could be located in town. One resident, Kevin O’Brien, questioned what role Naval Weapons Station Earle may have when it comes to building affordable housing in Colts Neck and questioned township officials’ previous responses to his concerns. According to O’Brien, Buss previously said Earle was not in play for affordable housing “at this time” and claimed that Deputy Mayor Michael Viola contradicted that by later saying that township attorneys are involved with Earle. O’Brien also raised concerns about the potential for affordable housing units being built near a blast zone at the base, and how building a road to access those units could lead to a hole in Earle’s protective fence. “Since our taxes are being paid for the attorneys to evaluate this, it appears this governing body does have Earle in their plans,” O’Brien said. “Plan B, perhaps.” In response to O’Brien’s concerns, Buss said the Township Committee isn’t trying to hide anything, but rather “trying to figure out all the ins and outs” of the housing requirements, which may have led to unintentional contradictions. “We assess a lot of different opportunities, and I think you [O'Brien] bring up very good points with different avenues with the Navy,” Buss said. “All of these things would come into consideration whether or not we’re looking at a piece of land and putting affordable housing somewhere, whether or not we’re working with the Navy.” McManus added that Earle is not in the town’s housing plan right now and said that if any affordable housing comes to fruition on that property, it will have to meet the necessary requirements. "We're in the middle of evaluating what additional strategies we might be able to use to reduce the scope of the durational adjustment," McManus said. "If there's something that can come to fruition there, and there's a client that works well for the township, we'll be able to incorporate it into the plan when all of that's been determined and confirmed." During the meeting, another resident brought up the Local Leaders for Responsible Planning’s (LLRP) recent decision in Superior Court, which reversed an original requirement that municipalities must have their housing plans reviewed by the Fair Share Housing Center as a condition of filing the plan by June 30. Though the ruling was considered a win for the LLRP, McManus said it’s a “limited win,” adding that the ruling is less helpful now than it would have been a few months ago. Following public comment on the plan, the Township Committee unanimously approved a resolution to endorse the 4th Round Housing Element & Fair Share Plan and authorized submission of the plan to the Affordable Housing Dispute Resolution Program. To see the full 4th Round Housing Element & Fair Share Plan, you can click here. Editor's Note: This story has been updated with additional information on the durational adjustment. Related...

Lemont's Thriving Pickleball Community Spans All Ages — And Plays Rain Or Shine

LEMONT, IL — If you stop by the Lemont CORE facility or walk the trails around the Lemont Park District's Centennial Park, you've most likely seen the courts packed with pickleball players who are a part of Lemont's thriving pickleball community. If you're not quite sure what pickleball is, it's a paddle sport where two or four players hit a plastic ball over a net. The rules are fairly similar to tennis, although the net is lower and the courts are smaller. According to USA Pickleball, the sport was invented in 1965 on Bainbridge Island in Washington. The Lemont Park District offers quite a few pickleball courts — outdoors at Centennial Park and Gleneagles Park, and indoors at its CORE facility. "They play every day," said Lauren Raspanti, director of marketing and community engagement for the park district. "Inside and outside." One of the astounding things about the players isn't how many of them are waiting on the bleachers of the CORE's gym for their turn on the court — although there were probably 30 or 40 who filed into the gym on just one rainy Wednesday morning — it's the variety of ages. "We have people playing into their 80s and even 90s," Mike Woods, who helps to organize the daily pickleball sessions, told Patch. He pointed out one player, Danny, who is 87, and another player, Don Mueggenborg, who is 91. Mueggenborg, a retired Lemont High School counselor, works out in the CORE facility every day and then comes to play pickleball. He told Patch that during the pandemic, his daughter and his granddaughter also got hooked on the sport. Now, the three generations play together at the park district. Many of the players transitioned to playing pickleball from tennis or even racquetball. Woods said he has been playing since 2016, and has previously played tennis himself. "I always say, it either gets you in shape or it kills you," Woods said. He has suffered two heart attacks, and said his doctor told him that staying in shape playing tennis and pickleball probably saved his life. Raspanti said the park district is also planning more pickleball courts at its Centennial Campus. As part of a referendum approved in 2024, Lemont residents approved constructing and renovating tennis and pickleball courts at the facility. "Most of the players come from Lemont," Raspanti said, although she added that there are some from nearby communities like Homer Glen and Orland Park. The park district even offers a pickleball membership, which gives access to the fitness center, indoor pool, open gym and swim, and of course, the pickleball open play times. "It's amazing," Raspanti said. "It's awesome to see everyone out here, every single day."...
