BRICK, NJ — An Ocean County man who is facing more than 90 charges in connection with a string of commercial burglaries in multiple towns has been ordered held until trial. Craig T. Orler, 48, is charged in at least four cases in Ocean County, Assistant Prosecutor Isabella Young said during a detention hearing before Superior Court Judge Pamela Snyder on Friday. He is accused of 34 burglaries of multiple units at the Cube Smart storage facility in Brick December and January, and in a separate case of stealing an ATV and a motorcycle, Young said. In another case, he was charged with burglarizing vending machines owned by the company he was working for Tri-State Vending, she said. Orler was arrested April 28 in connection with a burglary at a smoke shop in Manchester, Young said. He was tied to the ATV theft after he tried to sell it on Facebook, she said. Orler also has charges in five cases out of Howell Township filed against him, Young and Ocean County Jail records said. Those are burglary cases as well, according to court records. Orler has a lengthy criminal history, Young said. While she did not detail past convictions during the detention hearing, court records show multiple guilty pleas in commercial burglaries dating back at least 20 years. He was on supervised release following a federal sentence for illegal firearms dealings when he was arrested in Manchester in May 2020 in connection with a commercial burglary ring operating in Ocean County. That release was revoked in 2021, according to federal court records. Young called Orler's actions "a blatant disregard for the law." "He is a continuous and constant danger to the community," she said. Snyder agreed, and rejected arguments from the public defender suggesting home monitoring in ordering Orler to remain in jail. On Tuesday night, representatives from 7 Brew will return to the Joliet City Council Chambers, this time, urging city officials to approve a second drive-thru permit location for their company even though their first project still has not happened. According to the Council agenda, 7 Brew informed city officials in mid-April they now want to build a new drive-up coffee shop at 2545 Plainfield Road. The proposal calls for a tiny building of only 515 square feet, a 247-square-foot remote cooler, a parking lot and parking spaces. "Employees serve customers in the 7Brew drive-through directly at their vehicle windows. This allows two drive-through lanes to operate at all times, as customers are not required to pull up directly in front of a service window," a letter on behalf 7 Brew informed Joliet. " No ordering stations with speakers are proposed, as employees will take orders directly in the queuing line with handheld devices ... We are requesting that the application be taken to the next available City Council meeting." Joliet City Public Works Director Greg Ruddy has sent a letter to the Council urging them to vote in favor of the drive-thru permit. The proposed development involves construction of a new building on a vacant outlot within the Millenium Square Subdivision, Ruddy explained. As for the empty Long John Silver on West Jefferson Street, Joliet Patch interviewed City Hall officials in early March for a project update since the 7 Brew project has yet to happen. The City Council approved the Long John Silver redevelopment in the summer of 2023. “Very much a live project," responded Dustin Anderson, Joliet's director of community development. Anderson said that 7 Brew submitted permits in February "and we have provided them with some comments on necessary revisions. HINSDALE, IL – An attorney for Hinsdale High School District 86's board defended the handling of a closed meeting Thursday night. Until the meeting, the board kept secret from the public the legal exception under which it would close the doors. The board is not legally required to inform the public of the exception on the meeting agenda, which the district released two days earlier. But most public bodies release such information. And District 86 used to as well. It is unclear why it abandoned the practice. Given that the board's majority is changing in four days, it was an unusual time to hold a closed meeting. During public comments, resident Dale Kleber, an attorney, said it would be illegal for the board to go into closed session without stating an exception. But Felicia Frazier, an attorney with the Odelson law firm, which represents the district, said the board only had to give an exception right before the closed session. Kleber replied that it was best practice to state an exception on the agenda. "I'm not saying you have to do it," he said. "You leave the public guessing if you don't do that." "I get that," Frazier said. "And that's something some boards do." After the exchange, board President Catherine Greenspon listed two exceptions to close the doors under the Open Meetings Act. They were union negotiations and pending, probable or imminent litigation. The board voted unanimously to close the doors, emerging about an hour later. No action was listed on the agenda. BOHEMIA, NY — Nearly 100 cats—both dead and alive in need of medical help–were removed from a Long Island home on Thursday, Suffolk SPCA Chief Roy Gross told Patch. Gross told Patch that during a rescue operation at a Bohemia home, his team found 28 deceased cats and 69 alive and in need of medical help. Meanwhile, advocates have argued that the reopening of Delaney Hall – which formerly held immigration detainees until it closed in 2017 and was turned into a halfway house – is a severe blow to constitutional rights. It’s also a violation of New Jersey state law, advocates say. Under a 2021 state law, all prisons in New Jersey – public or private – are banned from making new contracts with ICE to hold federal detainees. Prisons also can’t expand or renew old agreements. The law has seen pushback since Gov. Phil Murphy signed it in 2021, however. The GEO Group and CoreCivic – which runs the Elizabeth Detention Center in Union County – have challenged the state ban in court. The administration of former president Joe Biden took the side of private prison companies in that case, arguing that ICE needed detention centers near airports to expedite operations. A judge ruled in 2023 that CoreCivic could keep its jail in Elizabeth open. Federal authorities and prison companies are now seeking to add more detention space in New Jersey, despite the state’s ban. Trump’s immigration crackdown will likely create a massive profit for the GEO Group and CoreCivic. According to the GEO Group, the 15-year, fixed-price contract for Delaney Hall is expected to generate in excess of $60 million in annualized revenues for GEO in the first full year of operations. According to Open Secrets, the GEO Group spent $1.38 million lobbying the federal government in 2024, and CoreCivic spent $1.77 million. Much of their focus was the appropriations bill funding the Department of Homeland Security, which includes the budget for ICE. The day after Trump was reelected to his second term, the companies’ stock prices soared: GEO Group’s by about 41 percent and CoreCivic’s by nearly 29 percent. The reopening of Delaney Hall has seen a vocal outcry from immigrant rights supporters and some North Jersey residents. Hundreds of people gathered outside the facility in March, demanding that ICE put the reopening on ice. “Nearly 25 percent of New Jersey’s population are immigrants,” an advocate charged. “ICE has no place here.” Activists have continued to defend the state’s 2021 ban on ICE prison contracts, rallying in Philadelphia at a federal Third Circuit Court on May 1 to fight back against detention expansion in New Jersey. “Mass detention is a cruel, failed system that inflicts irreparable harm on our communities – it has no place in our state,” urged Amy Torres, executive director of the New Jersey Alliance for Immigrant Justice. “Our communities are watching, and we won’t stop until the ICE detention ban is fully defended and upheld,” agreed Eliana Fernandez, director of organizing at Make the Road New Jersey. The reopening of Delaney Hall has also seen pushback from city officials, who issued a “stop work” order in late March. Newark Mayor Ras Baraka accused ICE of opening the facility “without following proper building safety protocols” and without the necessary construction permits, continued certificates of occupancy and requests to change the building’s use. “They failed to give city officials access to conduct inspections required under municipal ordinances and state code,” the mayor alleged. “This violates city and state law.” The march towards reopening Delany Hall has continued despite this opposition, with ICE slamming the city’s legal pushback as “aggressive and legally unjustified.” Although the focus on federal immigration enforcement has ramped up since Trump took office, ICE raids also took place in New Jersey during Biden’s watch.
